Richard Phillips- Gossip Girl Art

Richard Phillips (Born in 1966,in Marblehead, Massachusetts, US. Curently lives and works in New York).

Phillips is know for his large glossery hyper-realistic paintings. Many of the works  are inspired from the 50’s, 60’s and 70s and popular culture. The works are often clos-up portraits,with women from fashion and soft porn, but also with persons from the pop music, films, and politics.

The artist has exhibited his works in many solo and group shows around in Europe and the US. He is also represented in  a numerous of important collections such as the Albright- Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, the Denver Museum,Tate Modern, the Withney Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Richard Phillips is represented with  two pieces on the GG set, with the famous famous “Spectrum” hanging on the wall in the van der Woodsen apartment, and the “Scout” -painting over the bed of Chuck Bass.

With about 3 millions viewers of the show  each week, a lot of fans have shown their interest for the work “Spectrum”. As a result of this, one can now get a reproduction of the work for 250 USD from the Art Production Fund.

The Art Production Fund is a non-profit art organization based in New York. The organization  leased the set a collection of 25 pieces, among 3 original, the rest high quality reproductions. The production designer Lauren Weeks,set decorator Christina Tonkin, and Stephanie Savage have have worked closely with the Production Fund to match the art with the characters in the show.

Aaron Young- Gossp Girl Art, Van der Woodsen set

Aaron Young (Born: 1972 in San Francisco, CA. Lives and works in New York).

Aaron Young created uproar when he invited a local biker to drive a motorcycle until he either could not see through all the smoke or his tires were burned, in Francisco Art Institue’s gallery.  As payment, Young gave the biker beer. The artist on the other hand was nearly expelled from the school.

The result of the wild, but short drive was a drawing on the floor-which had been Diego Riveras earlier studio.   In spite of the unconventional performance, Aaron Young was allowed to continue his education, and has later participated in many important shows and exhibitions. The artist is now highly requested.

Young is also known for his collaboration with Nate Lowman, but mostly known his teamwork with different representatives from different subcultures or rebels like bikers and skateboarders.

Aaron Young is also known for beeing a part of the “Warhol’s Children”, a group of NewYork-based and Warhol-inspired artists who have achieved a lot of attention in the art world.

In collaboration with the Art Production Fund and the Park Avenue Armory, Young held his first public show in New York, placed in the Drill Hall, september 2007. The project was named “Greeting Card”, inspired by Jackson Pollock.Young painted 288 panels of plywood in colors of pink, red,orange and yellow fluorescent, painted with black on the top concealing the brighter colors. He then placed all the panels out on the floor, forming a 128 x 72 feet canvas on which twelve motorcycle riders performed after direction from Aaron Young. The movements from the tires formed a pattern of burnouts on the panels. It is one of this panels which is placed in the Gossip Girl- show.

Jessica Craig-Martin (Born:  1963 Hanover, NH).  Lives and works in New York, NY

Craig-Martin has worked for Vogue and Vanity Fair, and has become celebrity artist. She is also on the board of Directors at The Art Production Fund who has curated “the Van der Woodsen loft” for Gossip Girl.

The artist rarely let the audience identify the subject’s faces, and she also photographs “the moment”, or part of clothes or a party. By doing so, Craig-Martin tells details about the society’s superficial   way of living or thinking, and also their obsession of the surface.

In the same episode Lily’s art-dealer picks out art for decoration of the Van der Woodsen apartment.  Jessica Craig –Martin has been chosen for the kitchen wall. Other artist who has been picked out is Kiki Smith for the hall, Richard Phillips by the stairs, and Ryan McGinley next to the fireplace.
